July 2022 Newsletter

A ROYAL FLUSH

Hot on the heels of Her Majesty opening our new facility (What? Did you miss her?) we are pleased to announce that your newly refurbished loo is up and…err… running. I am sure you will be impressed. Please do your bit to ensure it remains spick and span and make the life of our excellent cleaning operative Kevin that much easier.

We are thankful to the contractor for the high quality of his work.

CONTACT DETAILS

We have had a couple of problems recently where we needed to contact people on important matters but failed to do so as changes of email address and/or phone number had not been notified.

If anything changes then please let us know. A quick email to awslg.ltd@gmail.com will suffice.

SUMMER TIDY UP

The great Summer Tidy Up will happen on Saturday 16th July. Please come along and help make our site the best! It’s from 9am onwards outside the Canteen. There’s a big bonus on offer as well. A free (yes free!) BBQ after all your hard work.

MOTH WEEKEND

To take place over the weekend of 16th/17th July is a must for all ages.

This event, presented by Malcolm Bridge, will start at 9pm in the hall beginning with a power point slide show showing some pictures of our native moths and describing their lifestyles, their importance to bats and birds which depend upon them and answering questions from the audience.

At about 9.30pm we will go into the wildlife meadow where the moth trap will be running.

The trap will be left overnight until everyone reassembles in the meadow at 9.30am on Sunday for viewing the nights catch before releasing them. The event should be over by 10am.

PLOT INSPECTIONS

Please can we remind you, as mentioned in a previous Newsletter, that the days of numerous ‘warning letters’ are over. We now have over 40 people on the waiting list who are keen to cultivate. In the minority of cases, with regret, we are terminating people’s tenancy. If there’s a temporary problem please let us know. We may be able to help before it gets to that stage.

ANNUAL SHOW

The Annual Show is scheduled to take place on Sunday 4th September.
In the last Society News Sheet a request was made for volunteers to help out on the day.
This follows on from the Jubilee Celebration which, whilst a great success, was organised and run by very few people.
We need commitment to help from at least 10 people in the lead up, during, and then after the event.
Less than that and we’re afraid it will be a ‘No Show’.
To give you some idea of the scale of the help needed here’s a list of ‘available’ jobs:
Jobs:

  • Administration - preparing schedule, preparing certificates, entry forms
  • Cleaning and setting up hall,
  • Clerking entries Saturday am/pm Sunday am x 3
  • Judges- Fruit and Vegetables , flowers, cakes and drinks
  • Writer for certificates during the judging.
  • Setting up Gazebos
  • BBQ, Preparing food e.g onions, Cooking , Serving. Taking money
  • Afternoon Teas- preparing / serving cakes, Tea, Coffee, Taking Money Washing up
  • Auction of goods ( 2 needed)
  • Clearing up
If you can help please speak to Jen Tapping, Debbie White or any member of the Committee. Alternatively send a separate email to awslg.ltd@gmail.com

SECURITY

Several sheds were the target of vandals/thieves over the last week. Please be vigilant. In particular it has been noted that the main gate has been left unlocked on more than one occasion. Please lock it or ensure the person following you does.

POLICIES

We are a Society with a wide range of people and I’m sure everyone will agree that we are all entitled to our views and to have respect from everyone else, irrespective of our different cultures and beliefs. In common with most organisations these days we feel it is important to state this as part of our ethos. We are compiling, therefore, an Equality & Diversity Policy which will be published in due course. We are also in the process of clarifying our policy with regard to Complaints, along with a review of our very outdated Rules and Regulations. These things are not easy to complete overnight however, and we want to get it right. Further information to follow.

Our CCTV and Data Protection Policies are all complete thanks to the work of Kin Tse and can be viewed on the allotment website HERE

MOWERS

During the recent hot and dry weather the demand for mower hire has been almost non-existent. So rather than have a volunteer with nothing to do we may occasionally suspend the service. We will ‘trial’ this forthcoming weekend.

LIBRARY

A reminder that we have an extensive book library available to you in the canteen. You can also find what’s on offer by accessing awslg.libib.com. All this is thanks to the hard work of Bob Taylor. Thank you Bob!
