Site, Soil and Preparation
Celeriac grows in sunny or partially shaded locations, in rich moist soil that has plenty of well rotted manure or compost added in the previous season.
Indoor Sowing
Sow thinly in seed compost in trays or modules. Keep in a warm location or propagator about 18C.
Outdoor Sowing
Celeriac can be sown outside in a seed bed in late spring under cloches to keep warm at about 18C.
Thinning
When indoor seedlings have 2 true leaves and are large enough to handle pot them on into individual modules or small pots. Harden them off in a cold-frame before planting out.
Transplanting
Plant seedlings to their final positions in early summer at 300mm (12in) spacings in rows 450mm (18in) apart.
Care
Water regularly in dry weather and keep moist at all times. A good application of mulch will help.
Harvest
Heads should be ready for lifting from early autumn.
